Cycle and Walk Safely This Winter
Advice For Cyclists
Slow down. Allow more time for braking, turning and changing conditions.
Be seen. Lights on your bike and reflective clothing are a must.
Stay warm. A base layer, an insulating layer and a waterproof/windproof layer on top is a good foundation. Waterproof, insulated gloves, thick socks, a close-fitting hat or helmet liner, and a scarf or face will take takes care of cold cheeks.
Advice For Pedestrians
Don't go until they stop. Don't step into the road until you are sure that traffic has stopped. Watch carefully as you step in front of a stopped vehicle to make sure that the rest of the traffic from both directions has also stopped.
Be seen. Make it a point to wear light or bright colored clothing and consider adding strips of reflective tape (available in hardware stores and bike shops). Carry a flashlight or use a lit cell phone to make yourself more visible.
Cross here. It may take you a block out of your way, but cross at a signalized crosswalk whenever possible. Your safety is worth the extra time.
